Mobile split air conditioners compared

An indoor and an outdoor unit, linked by a flat refrigerant hose that runs through the gap of a tilted window: mobile split units cool more quietly and efficiently than a monoblock – with no hole in the wall. Here you will find prices and the key differences.

How a mobile split differs from a monoblock and a fixed system

A monoblock sits entirely inside the room and pushes warm exhaust air outside through a thick hose – while warm air constantly seeps back in through gaps. A permanently installed split system is efficient and quiet, but it needs a core-drilled hole, a refrigeration technician and usually your landlord's consent.

The mobile split sits in between: the outdoor unit hangs on the windowsill or stands on the balcony, and the indoor unit rolls on castors. The two are connected by a pre-filled refrigerant hose only a few centimetres thick that fits through a tilted window. No drilling, no installer, and you take everything with you when you move.

What to look for when buying

The market is small: the Midea PortaSplit (12,000 BTU, 3.5 kW) is the best-selling unit, alongside models such as the Remko RKL 495 DC with more power for large rooms. What matters is cooling capacity matched to the room size, how loud the indoor unit is, and whether you also want to heat.

  • Cooling capacity: 12,000 BTU (3.5 kW) covers roughly 35–45 m²; for larger rooms choose a bigger model
  • Heating: many mobile splits work as heat pumps and heat very cheaply in spring and autumn
  • Noise: in the PortaSplit the compressor sits in the indoor unit – about 39 dB in silent mode, noticeably more at full load
  • Hose length and window gap: the refrigerant hose needs a way outside; matching seals are available for tilt windows
  • Condensate: the unit pumps condensate outside – keep the drain clear (see error P1)
  • Refrigerant: current units mostly use R32; the next PortaSplit generation from 2027 switches to the more climate-friendly R290

Who a mobile split is right for

If you rent, want to cool a room or a small flat on a regular basis and find a monoblock too loud or too inefficient, this is for you. The extra cost over a monoblock pays off on your electricity bill because no warm air is drawn back in. If you only need cooling on a few days a year, or want to wheel one unit between several rooms, a budget monoblock is often the more sensible choice.

FAQ: Mobile split ACs

Do I need a professional installer for a mobile split air conditioner?

No. The refrigerant line is factory-filled and simply plugs in. You need neither a core-drilled hole nor a refrigeration technician – which is why the unit also suits rented flats.

How does the hose get outside?

Through the gap of a tilted window or a balcony door. The refrigerant hose is only a few centimetres thick; a window seal or sealing panel keeps the rest of the gap closed.

Is a mobile split really quieter than a monoblock?

Usually yes, because the waste heat is released outside and the indoor fan can run more slowly. In the PortaSplit, however, the compressor sits in the indoor unit and is audible during operation – about 39 dB in silent mode.

Can I use it for heating as well?

Most mobile split units work as heat pumps and heat very efficiently down to an outdoor temperature of around 0 °C. They are no replacement for central heating in deep winter, but a cheap supplement in spring and autumn.
