Budget air conditioners compared

Nobody needs a four-figure unit for ten hot days a year. Below 400 euros there are decent monoblocks – as long as you save in the right places and not in two particular ones.

What budget units can do – and what they can't

Below 400 euros you get almost exclusively monoblocks with 7,000 to 12,000 BTU, mostly energy class A and without an inverter. They reliably cool a room but are louder and slightly thirstier than pricier models. If you only run the unit on ten days a year, you will hardly notice the difference on your electricity bill.

Where you should not cut corners

Cooling capacity must match the room – an undersized unit is the most expensive mistake because it never switches off. A good window seal is a must, otherwise you are cooling the back yard. And a timer or night mode makes the difference between a unit you use and one that ends up in the cellar.

  • Cooling capacity: at least 60 W per m², preferably 80 W
  • Window seal included – or order one at the same time
  • Timer and night mode
  • Read reviews on noise and condensate – that is where models differ

Watch the price history

Air conditioners are a seasonal product: cheap in spring, scarce and expensive in the first heatwave, and discounted again in September. Our product pages show the price history of recent weeks – if you are not sweating right now, buy out of season.

Typical models in this price range

The entry-level segment is crowded with Comfee (Breezy Cool, MPPH series), Suntec Impuls, Tristar, Klarstein Metrobreeze and Einhell, as well as DIY-store own brands. They differ less in cooling capacity than in noise, build quality and controls: a unit with a clearly readable display, a usable remote control and a tight exhaust connection is worth the extra 30 euros. In this class, eBay offers from retailers with a return policy are often cheaper than Amazon – we show both.

FAQ: Budget air conditioners

Are air conditioners under 300 euros any good?

For small rooms and occasional use, yes. Expect 7,000–9,000 BTU, simple controls and an audible fan. For a 40 m² living room, 300 euros is not enough.

When are air conditioners cheapest?

Usually in March/April and from late August. During heatwaves prices rise and popular models sell out.

Is a used air conditioner worth it?

For recent units with a receipt, yes. For older models with R410A refrigerant, rather not – they are less efficient and can hardly be repaired if they break down.
