Quiet air conditioners compared
Our first PortaSplit stood in the bedroom – and taught us that 39 dB on the spec sheet and a compressor starting up at three in the morning are two different things. What dB figures are worth, which design is genuinely quiet, and which models have a night mode worthy of the name.

What dB figures mean
Manufacturers usually state either the sound power level or the sound pressure at one metre – which is not the same thing, and just 3 dB more already means double the sound energy. As a rough guide: 40 dB is a quiet library, 50 dB a quiet conversation, 60 dB a conversation at normal volume.
Monoblocks typically run at 52–65 dB because the compressor and condenser fan work inside the room. Mobile split units release the waste heat outside; the Midea PortaSplit reaches about 39 dB indoors in silent mode – but its compressor sits in the indoor unit, so it is much louder at full load.
The quietest designs and models
Quietest of all are permanently installed split systems, where only a fan runs indoors (20–35 dB). Next comes the mobile split, then monoblocks with a dedicated silent mode (De'Longhi Pinguino Silent, Comfee Breezy Cool Pro, Trotec models labelled “Silent”) and finally basic monoblocks without night mode.
- Look at the dB figure in night mode, not the best-case value on the spec sheet
- Inverter compressors throttle down instead of switching on and off – quieter and more economical
- Place the unit 2–3 m away from the bed, not right next to it
- Put a rubber mat underneath so vibrations are not transmitted to the floor
Reduce rattling and humming yourself
Many noises come not from the compressor but from the thin plastic casing resonating along with it. A firm, level footing and a decoupling mat help straight away. If you want to go further, you can line the casing from the inside with self-adhesive butyl-aluminium damping mat – our guide “Make your PortaSplit quieter” shows how to do this step by step on the PortaSplit (note: opening the unit voids the warranty).
FAQ: Quiet air conditioners
How quiet is quiet enough for a bedroom?
Most people sleep without problems below 45 dB, and up to 50 dB once they get used to it. Above 55 dB is hardly suitable at night – better to pre-cool the room and switch off.
Is the PortaSplit suitable for the bedroom?
In silent mode, at about 39 dB, yes. The compressor sits in the indoor unit, though, so the unit is clearly audible when starting up and at full load. The ClimaPilot app offers a mode that makes the unit run more quietly.
Are there air conditioners that make no noise at all?
No – any air conditioning moves air and compresses refrigerant. Permanently installed split systems come closest, at 20–25 dB indoors.
