Midea PortaSplit: fixing common faults and problems
We know P1 by heart. The PortaSplit is a good unit with a few known quirks – most of them can be fixed in five minutes without tools. Here are the faults that we and our readers come across most often, with what actually helped.

Error P1 – condensate tank full
The most common fault: the condensate is not being pumped away. Drain the water via the plug on the underside; if P1 keeps coming back, flush the drain and the pump of the outdoor unit. If it happens constantly, ask your retailer or Midea for a unit from the newer production run – the problem has been mitigated there. The successor generation announced for 2027 gets a self-cleaning water filter and an outdoor unit that drains condensate with more pressure.
Unit cools too little
Usually the room is too big, doors or windows are open or the air filter is dirty. Clean the filter, seal the room and be realistic about room size (up to about 42 m²). A kinked refrigerant hose or an outdoor unit in blazing sun without air circulation also costs performance.
Water leaks or collects
Set up the indoor and outdoor units level and stable, and do not kink the refrigerant or condensate hose. This is often linked to error P1. Water running out of the outdoor unit is normal in heating mode.
Unit is too loud
The compressor sits in the indoor unit and can hum; only the condenser unit stands outside. Even so, the PortaSplit is usually quieter than a monoblock (about 39 dB in silent mode). Activate the “Quieter outdoor unit” mode in the ClimaPilot app to make the unit run more quietly. Rattling points to an unstable footing: place the unit more firmly and on a decoupling surface – or damp the casing, see our guide “Make your PortaSplit quieter”.
Wi-Fi or app won't connect
The SmartHome app needs a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network (not 5 GHz). Pair the unit again and make sure your router provides 2.4 GHz – on combined networks, briefly switch off the 5 GHz band while pairing.
Other error codes (E1, E2 …)
Other codes usually concern sensors or communication between the indoor and outdoor units. Check the plug of the connecting line and disconnect the unit from the mains for a few minutes. The full list is in the Midea user manual; for warranty claims, contact your retailer. Spare parts such as filters, connecting hoses or remote controls are stocked by spare-parts dealers such as FixPart, ersatzteilBLITZ or Ersatzteile24.
Unit won't start or switches off after a short time
If the PortaSplit won't start at all, first check the socket with another appliance, and the plug and fuse – it sounds trivial, but it is the most common cause. If the unit starts and switches off after seconds or minutes, a protection mechanism is usually behind it: a full condensate tank (P1), excessive temperature at the outdoor unit in blazing sun, or compressor protection after being switched back on too quickly. Wait three minutes, then restart. If the problem persists, disconnect the unit from the mains for ten minutes so the controller resets.
Bad smell or risk of mould
A musty smell when switching on comes from the evaporator: water condenses on the cold fins, and when the unit is idle, bacteria and mould spores grow there. The remedy is to let the unit run on in fan mode for ten to fifteen minutes after cooling so the evaporator dries – many units have a self-drying function for this. Wash the filter regularly, and before storing the unit let it dry out completely in fan mode for a day. An air-conditioning cleaning foam from the car sector helps with stubborn odours.
Remote control, display and controls
If the unit does not respond to the remote control, it is almost always flat batteries or a covered infrared sensor. If the display misbehaves or shows wrong temperatures, a reset by disconnecting the power helps. If you have lost the remote, you can control the PortaSplit entirely via the app – the manufacturer's app or ClimaPilot replace it completely, including timers and modes that are not even accessible on the remote.
Maintenance: keeping your PortaSplit in shape
A few minutes every two weeks will spare you most of the problems listed above:
- Remove the indoor unit's air filter, rinse it under running water and let it dry completely
- Clear pollen and dust from the outdoor unit's fins with a soft brush – clogged fins cost performance
- Flush the condensate drain and pump with clean water, especially before first use in spring
- Check the refrigerant line for kinks and chafing; never route it under tension
- Tighten the casing screws and check that castors and feet are secure
- After cooling, let the unit dry in fan mode (self-drying) so the evaporator doesn't get musty
Storing over winter
If you don't use the heating function, store the PortaSplit dry: drain all condensate, dry the unit in fan mode for a day, clean the filter, close the refrigerant line with the protective caps and put everything away, protected from dust, in a frost-free room. Don't coil the line tightly – keep the bending radius generous. In spring, before first use, flush the drain and run the unit in fan mode for an hour.
Outdoor unit ices up or drips in heating mode
In heating mode the outdoor unit becomes the evaporator and cools below the outside temperature – in humid air below about 7 °C, frost forms. That is normal; the unit defrosts at intervals, during which water runs out of the outdoor unit and the fan stops briefly. Only if the unit stays thickly iced up permanently is something wrong: check the air supply, clean the fins and don't place the outdoor unit in a corner or under a cover where the cooled air cannot escape.
Warranty and complaints
For the PortaSplit, Midea provides the statutory warranty via the retailer plus a manufacturer's guarantee – the terms are on the guarantee card. For a claim you need the proof of purchase, the serial number (sticker on the back of the indoor unit) and a short description of the fault, ideally with a photo or video of the error code. If you bought it at a DIY store, everything goes through the store; on Amazon, through the returns process. Important: if you have opened the casing, for example to damp it, you risk losing the warranty – if in doubt, make your claim first and modify afterwards.
FAQ
What does P1 mean on the PortaSplit?
The condensate tank is full or the pump is not working. Drain the water and flush the drain and pump of the outdoor unit.
How often do I need to clean the filter?
Every two weeks during the season, under running water – a dusty filter is the most common cause of weak cooling.
Where can I get spare parts for the PortaSplit?
From spare-parts dealers such as FixPart, ersatzteilBLITZ or Ersatzteile24 – filters, hoses, remote controls and mounting parts are usually available.
