How a monoblock works – and why it is never fully sealed

A monoblock houses the compressor, evaporator and condenser in a single casing. The waste heat goes out through the window via an exhaust hose (usually 13–15 cm in diameter). Because the unit blows room air outside, it creates slight negative pressure – warm air flows back in through gaps around doors and the window. Part of the cooling capacity is lost this way.

That is why a good window seal matters more than a few extra BTU: a sealing kit for tilt or sliding windows costs little and makes a noticeable difference. Dual-hose units, which draw in outside air to cool the condenser, partly avoid the problem but are rare.

BTU, kW and room size

Cooling capacity is stated in BTU/h or kilowatts; 1 kW equals roughly 3,400 BTU. As a rule of thumb, allow 60–100 W of cooling per square metre, depending on insulation, window area and sun exposure.

  • 7,000–9,000 BTU (2.0–2.6 kW): bedrooms and offices up to about 25 m²
  • 10,000–12,000 BTU (2.9–3.5 kW): living rooms up to about 40 m²
  • 14,000 BTU and more (from 4 kW): large open-plan rooms or loft floors
  • Energy label: A or A+ is typical for monoblocks; the EER (cooling output divided by power input) should be above 2.6

Noise, condensate and extras

At 52 to 65 dB, monoblocks are clearly audible – somewhere between a running fridge and a vacuum cleaner in the next room. Models with “Silent” in the name (De'Longhi Pinguino Silent, Comfee Breezy Cool) run noticeably quieter in night mode. Most units evaporate the condensate through the exhaust air; in high humidity you will still need to empty the tank now and then.

Useful extras: a timer and night mode, app control if you want to start the unit before you get home, and a heating function if it should also work in spring and autumn.

FAQ: Monoblock ACs

How much electricity does a monoblock air conditioner use?

A 12,000 BTU unit draws around 1.2–1.4 kW at full load. Because the compressor cycles once the target temperature is reached, daily consumption for 6 hours of use is usually between 4 and 6 kWh – the calculator on our home page works it out for your room.

Does a monoblock work without an exhaust hose?

No. Units advertised as hose-free are air coolers (evaporative coolers) and barely lower the room temperature. A real air conditioner has to move the heat outside.

How loud is a monoblock?

Typically 52–65 dB in operation. For bedrooms, a model with a night mode below 50 dB is worth it – or a mobile split, which releases the waste heat outside.

Can I extend the exhaust hose?

Better not: every metre of hose radiates heat back into the room and reduces performance. Short and straight to the window is best; an insulating sleeve for the hose also helps.
