Midea PortaSplit
DIY store stock · Amazon & eBay · Running costs
woklima grew out of a problem of our own: tracking down a Midea PortaSplit when it was sold out everywhere. Since then we have checked the DIY stores every hour, collected prices from Amazon and eBay and written down what we learned from our own unit.

DIY store links are plain comparison links with no affiliate programme. “Sold out online” means the online shop does not currently list the unit – branches may still have some on the shelf.
Comparisons
Every page: the matching units from the catalogue, plus what we learned ourselves when buying and running them.
Calculator
Set the room size, number of rooms and unit type. It is the same formula we used to check our own electricity bill.
Recommended
9,000 BTU≈ 2.4 kW per unit
Guide values: 80 W cooling capacity per m², average compressor load 60%. Top-floor flats, large windows or lots of devices in the room increase demand; a well-sealed window reduces it.
Deals
No discount theatrics: the cheapest new unit per class from Amazon and eBay right now. Price drops against the 30-day average will appear here once we have collected enough history.

No “best buy” lists: we run a PortaSplit ourselves, made it quieter, battled the error codes and checked the electricity bill.
Our app · free · open source
The manufacturer's app wanted a cloud account, kept losing the connection and could not make the outdoor unit quieter. So we wrote our own. It controls Midea air conditioners directly on your home network – no account, no ads, open source on GitHub.

Tablet and landscape: controls, options and live status on one screen.

Home screen widgets: sleep timer, on/off, temperature and mode without opening the app.
Local on your Wi-Fi, no cloud account
The app talks to the unit directly. After the first pairing it keeps working even when the manufacturer's server is having a bad day.
Scenes and weekly schedule
“Eco night”, “Full power”, “Comfort” – one tap instead of five settings. The weekly schedule starts the unit before you get home.
Quieter outdoor unit
The mode the manufacturer's app lacks: compressor and outdoor fan throttled while the neighbours are asleep.
Live consumption and cost
Power draw, indoor/outdoor temperature and total consumption in kWh – the figures our electricity cost calculator was built from.

Prices come in several times a day via the official Amazon and eBay interfaces; we store the history of eBay prices (Amazon prices only as current prices with a timestamp) so you can see whether a “deal” really is one. We check Midea PortaSplit stock every hour in the online shops and store systems of toom, OBI, Hornbach and Bauhaus – without any affiliate programme; it is purely a service. We have no test chamber: what we write about noise, error codes and running costs comes from operating our own unit, from spec sheets and from standards.
Methodology & data sources →A monoblock stands entirely inside the room and blows the warm exhaust air outside through a thick hose – while warm air flows back in. A mobile split such as the Midea PortaSplit has a small outdoor unit and a flat refrigerant hose through the window gap: quieter, more efficient, somewhat more expensive.
Rule of thumb: 60–100 W of cooling per square metre. 9,000 BTU (2.6 kW) covers about 25 m², 12,000 BTU (3.5 kW) 35–45 m². The calculator on this page works it out for your room.
Several times a day we check the online status of DIY store chains in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and show in-store stock at toom, OBI, Hornbach and Bauhaus on the map.
A 12,000 BTU unit draws around 1.1–1.4 kW; with 6 hours of operation and a cycling compressor, that is about 4–5 kWh, or 1.50–2 euros per day. A summer with 60 hot days costs roughly 90–110 euros.
Portable units, yes, without asking – nothing is drilled or altered. Permanently installed split systems that need a hole in the wall require your landlord's consent.
