They reliably cool a room but are louder and slightly thirstier than pricier models. If you only run the unit on ten days a year, you will hardly notice the difference on your electricity bill.

Cooling capacity must match the room – an undersized unit is the most expensive mistake because it never switches off. A good window seal is a must, otherwise you are cooling the back yard. And a timer or night mode makes the difference between a unit you use and one that ends up in the cellar.

Air conditioners are a seasonal product: cheap in spring, scarce and expensive in the first heatwave, and discounted again in September. Compare the current offers from several shops – if you are not sweating right now, buy out of season.

They differ less in cooling capacity than in noise, build quality and controls: a unit with a clearly readable display, a usable remote control and a tight exhaust connection is worth the extra 30 euros.
